Application Research on Vibration Reduction for Multi-propulsion Vessel with Vortex Generator

CSSRC designed a proper vortex generator (VG) for a multi-propulsion ship in order to reduce the local vibration of ship stern recently. After the cavitation observation and pulse measurements of model test, the sheet cavitation on propeller blades became more stable, and the VG obviously reduced the pulse pressure by up to 30%, from the results of local vibration calculation with ameliorative pulse pressure, the vibration value was under the critical value for this kind of ship. For the first time,VG will be applied for multi- propulsion ship in the near future for full scale vessel.

VG was firstly applied in aviation field, and its work principium was to producing high energy wing tip vortex, which eliminated or delayed the separation of flow, and increased the lift force for air plane. Nowadays, in the study of ship flow field, by utilizing a properly designed VG with proper size, proper installation angle and position, the flow filed on propeller disc will be more uniform and the pulse pressure induced by propeller cavitation will be reduced obviously.

The following pictures are the VG (designed by CSSRC) applications for single propeller merchant ships.
