On Dec 14, world’s largest fully-transparent passenger submersible “Huan Dao Jiao Long 1”, designed by China Ship Scientific Research Center (CSSRC), came into test run in Ya Long Bay, San Ya. This new high-tech equipment fills the gap of sightseeing submersibles in China. As China’s first sightseeing submersible which came into CCS classification, “Huan Dao Jiao Long 1” applies the successful innovative achievements from “Jiao Long” submersible. This successful launch is an important step on the industrialization of manned submersibles, which is of milestone significance for China’s sightseeing submersible industry.

The designers of “Huan Dao Jiao Long” are from the “Jiao Long” team. Ye Cong, the chief designer and driver of “Jiao Long” submersible, worked as the general designer of “Huan Dao Jiao Long”. 

Different from the traditional sightseeing submersibles in which the observation window is placed in the metal hull, “Huan Dao Jiao Long” is designed as fully transparent. It applies 1 segment spherical organic glass and 3 segment cylindrical organic glass as the pressure sphere. Tourists will feel like personally in the ocean and enjoy an incredible sightseeing experience through the transparent organic glass. 

The submersible can dive into 40m deep in the ocean. With the total length 7.9m, total width 3.6m and total height 4.4m, its passenger capacity is 9 people and lift capacity 23.9 ton. It is equipped with power supply system, buoyancy regulating system, life support system, air-conditioning system, advanced navigation and control system.

During the design period, the “Huan Dao Jiao Long” team from CSSRC overcame multiple key technologies, one of which was fully-transparent glass’s sealing technology. In addition, a series of pressure resistance tests, seal tests, water tank tests and sea trials were conducted to ensure the reliability of the submersible.

It is acknowledged that many parties had given supports to make China’s first type self-developing fully-transparent passenger submersible come into reality.
